basketball – 10 Best NBA Players Ever

condominiums This morning I woke up at 7 am and, in my normal routine, I switched on NBA TV. The 1988 All-Star game was playing. While composing my “Tendon-Gate” article, and hearing Dick Stockton doing the play by play in the background, I had to stop and watch.

“Tendon-Gate” was on hold for now…

As I watched, I realized this may have been the game that encompassed everything the 1980’s were. As the decade was winding down and the NBA greats of that era were moving passed their prime, this exhibition was extremely hard fought with a blend of fundamentals and gritty determination – qualities that are far lacking in today’s All-Star games.

These guys wanted to defeat their peers, they saw this game as less of an exhibition for fun and more of an artistic exhibit of talent in a 5 on 5 competition of who is the best conference – not player.

Until today, I never realized what a bridge year 1988 was. The natural evolution of the game was perfectly displayed in Chicago Stadium on that Sunday afternoon.

juegos sonic As some of you know, I collect NBA basketball games. I enjoy watching old footage of 1970’s and 1980’s basketball. Though I always marvel at the fundamentals displayed in those vintage contests, I can’t help but notice how, compared to today’s game, the players seem to be moving in slow motion. The harmonious blend of great play-making never lacked in those old games, but the athleticism displayed in today’s league was certainly only still a trailor for what the league would grow into.

One aspect that shot out at me during the footage of this game was that the athleticism of the players started to emerge. Early in the second quarter, I was intently typing away at my lap top when I heard Stockton bellow out “Michael Jordan breaks free”, I looked up at my plasma and saw Jordan’s full sprint down the court on a fast break for another tongue wagging dunk.

The combination of the Chicago Stadium crowd, Dick Stockton’s voice and the sight of Jordan’s highlight reel dunk, brought back memories of watching games such as these in my grandmother’s living room, on her old TV that resembled more of a piece of furniture then it did a piece of technology. I can still smell the sauce cooking in the kitchen and I can remember thinking “please let the sauce not be finished until half time”. I didn’t want to miss a second of the contest, as every play was a highlight reel of offensive greatness and defensive grit.

The picks were set like an illustration out of a text book, the lob passes were set up with perfection, the fast break was ran like a play on a chalk board and speaking of plays, these teams ran none yet they were in perfect sync. This was an era where coaches were more like managers and less like head’s of state. The intelligence of the player dominated the game and “x’s & o’s” were less necessary.

Did I mention hustle in this exhibition contest? I just looked up as Larry-Legend was diving into the stands for a lose ball as if it was the finals. Is this an exhibition?

Did I mention dunks? With the human Highlight Reel and Air-Jordan sharing the basketball for the East, there was no

Years later MJ would pass the torch to Kobe Bryant in All-Star compitition
lacking of amazing dunks.

In 1988, The Lakers were champs and the Celtics were one year removed from that title. The two titans from each coast were still the powerhouses in the league. Eager on lookers such as Isiah Thomas and Michael Jordan were still licking their chops, waiting for their chance to compete for the greatest prize in basketball. Though Larry and the Celtics had competed in their last title bout, Ainge, Bird and McHale were still the prized possessions in the East. Speaking of the Celtics, where was the Chief? He was missing from this All-Star competition. Robert Parish was always in the shadows of Larry and Kevin – a symbol of the great talent those old Celtics teams possessed.

Magic still had three Finals appearances left in him, yet 1988 would be his last championship and Kareem’s last finals appearance. A perfect night cap to Kareem’s twenty year odyssey.

Kareem was moving around Chicago stadium like more of a 20 year old man in his prime and less of a 40 year old veteran close to waiving goodbye.

It seemed every player back then had their signature move. Larry Bird had the fade away jumper, Magic had the no look pass, Kevin McHale had the up and under, Hakeem had the baseline jumper, Worthy had the baby hook, Jordan had the tongue wagging dunk, Isiah had the killer cross over but there was only one player who possessed the most unstoppable weapon in sports.

FSBO  Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s sky hook was unstoppable. Even at 41, as his extension and agility had faded away, Kareem still commanded a double team because of the devastation a team would face at the mercy of the unblockable sky hook.

Billy Cunningham, doing the color commenting, summed up the indelible legacy Abdul-Jabbar left on the game when he said “I played in All-Star games with him, I coached All-Star games against him and now I am broadcasting a game he’s playing in”.

No player’s domination would ever span generations the way Kareem’s did and in this All-Star game, one of his last, Kareem would fittingly become the All-Star games leading scorer. Out of 39 All-Star games played at that point, Kareem appeared in nearly 20 of them. A man who’s antisocial nature and uncharismatic approach with the media left his accomplishments often forgotten or unmentioned by today’s NBA scholars. This game, however, is a testament to the undeniable impact he left on the sport.

The NBA’s greatest winner, Bill Russell (then the coach of the Kings) looked on from the audience at the champions of the 70’s and 80’s such as Kareem, Magic, Bird, Mo Cheeks and Moses Malone were flanked by emerging champions of the 90’s such as Michael Jordan, Isiah Thomas and Hakeem Olajuwan.

In a form of poetic justice, just three years removed from the East All-Stars “Freeze-Out”on Jordan, Larry Bird looked for Michael on every play routing for his Air-ness to win the MVP in his home town.

There was one man who was most missed on this All-Star Sunday. The man who created the most exciting highlight reels in the history of the game. Julius Erving, the Ambassador of NBA basketball, retired before the 1988 season started and, for the first time in his life, looked on from the stands with pride as Bird and Magic seemed to be holding the torch he passed just fine.

In an era when the Eastern Conference dominated the NBA, it was fitting that they ended up winning that game. Jordan scored 40 point and It was a pretty decisive win by the Eastern All-Stars but that didn’t deter the Western squad from competing to the very end.

No professional athlete can boast such a claim.

I consider myself to be a somewhat astute NBA historian and yet I had to research all of Jordan’s accolades online as to not forget any.

Above all of his personal and team achievements, perhaps Jordans most admirable contributions to professional sports was his ability to face defeat, adversity, world fame, and tremendous success with grace, maturity, sportsmanlike conduct, and humility You can be published without charge. Sports Book Gamblers Note Lightning Acquiring Gagne

General Manager Steve Yzerman continues to make moves that should strengthen the Tampa Bay Lightning for next season and sportsbook bettors in NHL betting are starting to notice.

The Lightning obtained forward Simon Gagne from Philadelphia on Monday and his acquisition should give Tampa more scoring punch in hockey lines. The Tampa Bay Lightning is 40-1 to get the Stanley Cup at the sports book.

Sportsbook odds on Tampa Bay had them as long shots a great deal last season but that could change in 2010-2011. Yzerman has been making some moves that ought to make Tampa a better squad. The newest one that brought him Gagne could be a great one. The teams permitted defenseman Matt Walker and a fourth-round draft pick for Gagne. Gagne had 17 goals and 23 assists in 58 matches last season, as indicated by sportsbook statistics. He has played 664 competitions in his NHL career and has 259 goals and 265 assists. He is 10th in points and in competitions played, and he 9th on the Flyers’ career list in goals. Gagne was pretty excellent for the philadelphia flyers a year ago in the playoffs since he had nine goals and 3 assists. He should be able to supplement Vincent Lecavalier, Steven Stamkos and Martin St. Louis next year.

The Flyers will be giving up a well-liked competitor in Gagne and receiving Walker in return. Sportsbook statistics indicated that he had two goals and three assists last season for the Tampa Bay Lightning. He has four goals, 26 assists and 444 penalty minutes in his career. General Manager Paul Holmgren has never been identified as someone who could evaluate skill so giving up Gagne to get Walker is not a major surprise. Holmgren likes participants who commit time in the penalty box and Walker unquestionably fits that pattern.

The deal is completely one-sided for the Tampa Bay Lightning in writing. Gagne is a player who directed the philadelphia flyers in goals 3 times. He went to the All-Star competition 2 times and was the squad’s MVP two times. He was a very popular player in Philadelphia and will be missed on and off the ice. The flyers were an unexpected team last season versus the sports books probabilities when they made it to the NHL playoffs, proceeding all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals, but they’ve made a step back with the loss of Gagne.

Stanley Cup Gambling Highlight on Game 4

The Stanley Cup wagering event for 2010 has officially reached the halfway point with Game 4  of the hockey gambling tournament just hours away. The Philadelphia Flyers would love to even things up at 2-2 after a striking Game 3 4-3 OT win, and the hawks have staked out a 2-1 lead heading into the Game 4  NHL odds matchup in Philadelphia.

As to which squad will win the next game of the Stanley Cup gambling event is up in the air, but with an NHL wagering championship on the line you can be sure that the hockey betting event will carry on being fast and furious in Game 4 .

To date this NHL playoff wagering series has been incredible. Each match has been decided by a single goal and several of these may have gone in either direction. We may just as easily be looking at a 2-1 Philly lead as a Chicago lead.

It was not all that long ago it looked like the Flyers may be on the verge of being swept from the 2010 Stanley Cup betting action. Now, just a few days later the Philadelphia Flyers are on the verge of tying this hockey wagering series up at 2-2 and trying to take control of the series with a win in Game five at Chicago.

One crucial hockey betting factor to remember proceeding into this Stanley Cup wagering Game 4  is the fact that the home ice edge has been a key variable in this NHL odds matchup. The home squad has won every game so far and that does not seem likely to change in Game 4 . Philadelphia is one of the most hard places to play in the NHL playoff wagering event and the Flyers have been superb on the home ice this year and have lost just 1 game the entire post season at home.

It’s hard to imagine the Flyers losing a game in Philly but the Chicago Blackhawks are a threatening squad and if there’s any team that can steal a hockey wagering victory here it’s Chicago.

Even with losing Game 3  the Hawks ultimately got their leading scorers Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane on the scoreboard (Kane 1 goal and 1 assist, Toews 1 assist) and that could be a dangerous precedent for the Flyers. The Philly defenders have done an exceptional job shutting down Chicago’s star players and forcing other players like fringe veteran Marion Hossa to beat them. But it can be like a shark getting a taste of blood one time big time players like Toews and Kane get smell of the net.

But goal scoring wasn’t the biggest concern for the Philadelphia Flyers in Game 3 and it’s not apt to be the major issue for Game 4  of this hockey wagering series either. The Flyers focus will be on doing a greater job of protecting backup goalie Michael Leighton and keeping the Hawks from the net. Debatably now the greatest liability is Leighton, who was one time a shutout machine in the NHL playoff betting action.

Nevertheless, with the likes of Chris Pronger patrolling the ice the Flyers ought to be able to continue to contain the Blackhawks stars and outscore Chicago in Game 4 .

UFC 116 Wagering Breakdown: After Main Event, Card Is Lean On Competitions

On Saturday July third, the MFM Grand Garden Arena will be packed to the gills as this location will play host to the UFC betting competition.

And save for a few family members and friends of the various competitors involved in the UFC 116 odds competition, almost anyone in the building will be there to make MMA bets on one single competition. And as if anybody needs a tip as to which match in the UFC 116 betting line up that individuals are dying to see, it is the match that involves the two largest men in the building: Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin.

It may not be enough, no matter how much buzz this UFC betting Main Event gets. And that’s not due to the fact of the talent of the competitors involved (admittedly, both of the enormous men lack the general all-around MMA abilities that most UFC wagering winners have got) but simply considering they’re enormous individuals. Even if they lack the grace of the lighter competitors, the sports betting public to watch heavyweights beat each other senseless. There’s a major chance that all of the hype will result in about two minutes of fighting.

Carwin has never gotten out of the 1st round, winning 7 of his bouts via knockouts and 5 by means of submission. And while Lesnar has a pretty impressive history, he just came from a near-death experience. A fight with a serious illness that kept him to a hospital bed, not able to even eat for two weeks, kept him out of the ring for a number of months. In fact, this bout is in fact a rescheduling of a match between Lesnar and Carwin that was meant to happen last year.

And the UFC betting public additionally adores stars. There is no star bigger than Lesnar right now in the MMA wagering action. Lesnar is the uncommon MMA fighter that has general pop culture stardom and a pretty high level of skill inside the Octagon. Plenty of sports betting enthusiasts have been drawn to this UFC 116 gambling event by his superstar alone.

But soon after this Main Event between these 2 huge men, the fight card, or at least the UFC 116 odds action, is pretty slim pickings. Peppered throughout the remainder of the Main Card there are names here and there of competitors that MMA gambling fanatics have almost certainly heard of, or maybe even viewed combat a more well known contender in some other UFC wagering events, but for the most part this is about as lackluster collection of competitions as we’ve viewed at a UFC gambling event this year.

The UFC 116 betting game between Japanese new-comer Yoshihiro Akiyama and Chris Leben is the only other bout that genuinely sparks any interest. Akiyama is a big MMA celebrity in Asia and his fighting pedigree is impeccable. He has the likelihood to become a major star in the UFC betting competition but his adversary, Chris Leben, hardly seems up to the task.

Lesnar versus Carwin will occur live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Alabama Crimson Tide

The Crimson Tide of Alabama has been one of several premiere teams in all of college football from the beginning from the sport. The team has garnered an incredible thirteen recognized national championships, as well as eight from the so-called “consensus” titles, too as numerous conference championship and bowl game victories. Its winning tradition has made it on the list of most recognizable teams in America, and makes it one of the most lucrative recruiting centers for elite college players. For a quarter of a century, 1 man coached the Crimson Tide to nearly half of its total national titles. That man, whose tenure at Alabama stretched from 1957 via the end of 1982, was genially known as Bear Bryant. The Bear turns it aroundBryant’s entrance into the Alabama program after leaving his old job at Texas A&M came on the heels of 1 of Alabama’s rare losing streaks. Though the team had suffered through a series of season with losing records, the Bear was determined to turn it around quickly, and did. His first season culminated in a five win record, with four games lost and one particular that resulted in a tie. The new coach brought with him a disciplined coaching style that inspired his players to elevate their game to meet the challenges provided by every opponent. It didn’t take long for the Bear to once again have the Crimson Tide knocking on the door of another national championship. The fourth season of Bryant’s leadership resulted in a major bowl game victory ad the first of what would be Bryant’s six national championships with the team. From that point onward, the Alabama teams that Bear coached were consistently dominant; during a six year period from 1961 via 1966 the Alabama program compiled sixty wins. During that same time frame they lost only five contests. That stretch included 4 conference championships, 3 recognized national titles, and two undefeated seasons. Alabama was in bowl games at the end of each of those six campaigns. The next decadeDuring the following decade, the Alabama Crimson Tide would win all but two of that decades SEC titles, while garnering three more national championships. During a 1971 game between the Crimson Tide and the USC Trojans, Bear made what would later turn out to have been one of several more historic decisions in Alabama football history. Bryant decided to start the very first black player, John Mitchell. Not only did Bryant’s team win that game, his decision to allow the first African American Alabama player to serve in a starting role on the team changed ‘Bama football forever. The end of Bryant’s coaching career personified his team’s success as he left with a victory in the 1982 Liberty Bowl. At the time of his departure, the Bear had probably the most victories of any coach in history, at 323. Sadly, his retirement from coaching preceded his death by mere weeks. To this day, his quarter of a century with the Crimson Tide program is still viewed by most coaches at all levels as one of several most inspiring periods of football success in history.

Rays Liked on the Road in Friday MLB Gambling

Tampa Bay visits the Cleveland Indians on Friday and looks to continue their road success in baseball gambling at the online sportsbook.

The Rays are preferred in MLB wagering against the Indians on Friday, largely because they’ve got the best road history in all of MLB wagering.

Tampa Bay is expected to go with Jeff Niemann on Friday and he could be the most undervalued pitcher in all of baseball. He’s 8-2 on the season with a 2.92 ERA. He defeated the New York Yankees last time out to get his eighth win of the season. He is 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA in 3 career starts versus Cleveland.

After the All-Star break, a funny thing occurred to the Cleveland Indians. They started winning. For some reason the Indians have determined they want to look like a serious League squad again. They have a shot to win on Friday considering their All-Star pitcher Fausto Carmona is planned to be on the mound. He’s 9-7 with a 3.65 ERA this season. He is 2-1 with a 3.48 ERA in his last 3 starts. His ERA is high at 5.52 although he is 3-1 in his career versus the Rays.

Tampa Bay is appearing like a World Series contender. They might wind up winning the AL East. The Rays are in the top five in both hitting and in ERA so it is not chance that they’re winning. Tampa has a pretty great roster and a pitching staff that can matchup with any squad in the league. David Price was the All-Star starter but Niemann has been every bit as good and the odds are lower when he pitches. The Tampa Bay Rays are strong at home and on the road they have been superb all season.

The Indians swept the Detroit Tigers in a 4-game series, so they did very well after the All-Star break. The Indians continued that achievement vs Minnesota. Winning versus the Tampa Bay Rays is another matter, although winning against Detroit and Minnesota is fine. Tampa is one of the best squads in the league along with the Yankees and they will be a much tougher test for the Tribe. Cleveland will be longshots in this series against the Tampa Bay Rays and they still have a losing record at home at 21-22.

NFL Betting Win Totals For NFC North Directed By Packers & Vikings

The time to bet NFL lines is now and 2 squads from the NFC North are getting plenty of NFL gambling interest at the sportsbook.

The Vikings and Green Bay Packers each have regular season win totals of 9.5. You can place a football betting wager on the Packers going over or under that win total, though the over is -150.

NFL gambling probabilities on the Minnesota Vikings win total is somewhat different. It is the same number at 9.5 however the over is just -120. Green Bay is a pretty minor favorite to win the NFC North this season so it is sensible that their probabilities are a little higher. Keep in mind that both teams easily went over the total of 9.5 matches last season. The Vikings were 12-4 and won the division while the Packers were 2nd at 11-5. The NFC North overall is anticipated to be better, which is most likely the reason that the total on Minnesota and Green Bay is 9.5 instead of 10 or 10.5. The Vikings are expecting Brett Favre to return at quarterback and if that happens then Minnesota may get some action on their win total and on their total odds to win the NFC North and the Super Bowl.

The Bears were 7-9 last season and their win total in football gambling futures is 7.5. The Chicago Bears are expected to be greater though and the over is gaining action on this number at -155. Chicago would only have to finish at .500 for the over to be a victor and early action is going that way. The Bears have a new offensive coordinator in Mike Martz, a big name defensive addition in Julius Peppers and a lot of optimism. Peppers was recently obtained by the Chicago Bears after he became an unrestricted free agent in February of this year. They signed him to a 6-year, $91.5 milLion deal with $42 milLion certain in the first 3 years. Peppers should be worth the cost. He was the second in total pick in the 2002 NFL Draft by the Carolina Panthers. He has been picked for the NFC Pro Bowl 5 times and he’s been on the All-Pro Team two times.

The Lions won only 2 matches a year ago, but when you see their win total you will realize why the NFC North is anticipated to be stronger. Several individuals think that the Detroit Lions are going to be vastly greater in 2010, even though the under is -160, and Detroit’s win total is 5.5. The team made some good off-season additions and they will be greater on both sides of the ball. No longer will opposing squads have the ability to consider the Lions an automatic win.

Win totals are a fantastic way to be in the action for the complete 2010 NFL season. With only one wager it is possible to be rooting for or against a squad all year long. The NFC North should give gamblers something to contemplate with some interesting numbers.

San Francisco Giants

“Big Mac” Willie Lee McCovey, was already playing for that San Francisco Giants long before his name was given to the burgers in the famous restaurant chain. Of all on the twenty-two seasons of his playing job from 1959 to 1980 all but three several years was spent while using Giants. Even so, the accounts of his actively playing during his time tended to overlook his contribution for the game, no doubt due to the brighter star of Willie Mays, a teammate of his. Over the decades and from a clearer perspective, Huge Mac’s dependability, exceptional talent and level-headedness additional than qualify him for slot among the greatest in Baseball’s Hall of Fame.
His consistently powerful swing
From the very start off of his career, it had been evident that McCovey was a power batter and intended to become remembered as such by posterity. In all of his four at bats, he scored hits and followed up with a efficiency that so impressed the National League that he was chosen Rookie from the Year. In one on the more spectacular a long time in baseball history, McCovey’s batting average was .354. He took 13 household runs and an general 38 RBIs (Runs Batted In). What created this so awesome was that this record was produced although playing only 52 games. And baseball history was to prove that that excellent commence was only a preview of incredible performance that Huge Mac will be showing the globe of baseball for your rest of his profession.
Battling with Hank
Inside 1963 season, McCovey beat his own record for some runs by “going yard” 44 times in all. In a strange succession of coincidences, that quantity was exactly the same as the great Hank Aaron’s for that season. Both McCovey and Hank had been from Mobile, Alabama, equally were struggling to win the National League home run title and it turned out that each would share the coveted title between them. The amount 44 was not only the total property runs of McCovey and Hank, it absolutely was also their amount on the team for all of their careers at the end of which both men could be awarded places from the Hall of Fame with much more than 500 residence runs.
A quiet but distinguished baseball professional
“Big Mac” was by no means an outspoken sort and this was virtually certainly why less is recognized about him and his list of fans is shorter than those of the articulate Aaron and Mays in the very same League. Naturally media would seek out players who liked to say some thing to them. Apparently everything Massive Mac would ever have to say was to be found in his actively playing record. He was nominated Most Valuable Player for nearly half of his twenty-two several years while using the League, a distinction he finally won in 1969. Even so, his stint while using Giants did not come at a peak time for the team. The highest point in his job was almost obtaining to win a Globe Series Championship in 1962. Ironically, it had been Huge Mac who hit the last out for your Giants making the Yankees win the game along with the overall Championship title. For that rest of his actively playing career, Big Mac and the Majors would in no way again arrive so close to the World Series Title.

2010 NFL Preseason Betting: Top and Most Disappointing Backup QBs

Finding teams with the best backup quarterbacks is one of the biggest keys to winning in 2010 NFL gambling.

During the normal season football schedules it doesn’t matter since the starters play the whole game but in the course of the preseason the backups get a huge amount of time. This is a glimpse at the squads with the greatest and worst backup quarterbacks which will affect NFL preseason lines.

2010 NFL preseason wagering in the latest seasons has not been that successful on the Indianapolis Colts and the cause is the performance of their backup quarterbacks. Yes, the Colts have Peyton Manning who is a fantastic quarterback but he doesn’t play much during the preseason. That means the outcome of the match will be dependant on Curtis Painter, Tom Brandstater, Drew Willy, and Tim Hiller. Painter was a 6th round pick for the Colts in 2009. Brandstater was likewise a sixth round pick a year ago and only just barely became a member of the Colts in June. You may not want to bet on the Colts in the preseason.

The defending Super Bowl champs New Orleans Saints don’t have much behind starter Drew Brees. They have Chase Daniel and Sean Canfield. Daniel was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Redskins in 2009. He’s been cut regularly in favor of other participants from the Saints. Canfield was a seventh round pick in the 2010 Draft, and though he’s considered a great quarterback prospect, he’s going to have to fight Daniel to acquire the backup QB position behind Brees. The Colts and Saints are not teams to wager on in NFL preseason lines considering of their weak backup quarterbacks, despite the fact that they could be favorites in the normal season. Another team with nothing at backup quarterback is the Chicago Bears. They’ve got a great starter in Jay Cutler but nothing behind him with Caleb Hanie and rookie Dan LeFevour. The Bears could look good with Cutler but it may have difficulty with the backup quarterbacks. They’ve also got a fresh offense with coordinator Mike Martz.

Some squads have great backup quarterbacks who can make a big difference. The Baltimore Ravens have a solid starter in Joe Flacco and they have excellent depth behind him with Marc Bulger and Troy Smith. Bulger was the 2004 Pro Bowl MVP, and he is a 6th round pick from the 2000 NFL Draft. He’s been with the Ravens just a few weeks. The Tennessee Titans are another squad with a pretty good backup as Kerry Collins backs up Vince Young. Another excellent backup is in Miami as Chad Pennington backs up Chad Henne. The Washington Redskins have a good backup quarterback in Rex Grossman and they also have got Donovan.

When you get ready to make your bets this preseason you really need to look long and hard at the backup quarterbacks. Teams like New Orleans and Indianapolis have All-Pro quarterbacks as their starters but your wagers aren’t going to be dependant on Drew Brees and Peyton Manning. They are more probably to be established by who is playing in the fourth quarter.
